I grew up watching a show called The Lone Ranger. He was a self appointed guardian of the law who brought many outlaws to justice. Although he was actively fighting evil, his independence is not a good example for Christians.
When we trusted in Jesus for the forgiveness of our sins, we became members of His body, the church. We were not saved to be independent agents. It is God’s intention that we be subject to Christ and bound together with fellow believers.
The trouble is that many of us want Jesus and the benefits of salvation without having to answer to anyone. God has placed individuals in leadership positions at the local church for our benefits. The scriptures tell us that we should obey or submit to those that have rule over us. (Hebrews 13:17)
Don’t forsake the protection of the church. That is how you fall subject to false teachings and craftiness of men and the deceitful schemes of the devil. We need each other.
Ephesians 4:11-16
